How The World Works

The mad dogs howl...
Raw Story:

When Hillary Clinton predicted on Saturday that if she is elected "the oil-producing countries will drop the price of oil," she meant it as a warning, not as a campaign promise.

Clinton pointed to what happened in the 1980's, when Ronald Reagan "dismantled" the steps towards energy independence taken by President Jimmy Carter after oil prices soared in the 1970's. "Because costs were low, people didn't care," Clinton said, but she cautioned that we can't afford to be fooled the same way again. "We've got to figure out how were going to not be the frog in the cold water anymore."

Now it seems that Clinton's attempted warning against complacency when it comes to our dependence on foreign oil may have been too subtle, because right-wing bloggers quickly twisted it into something very different.

"Hillary Clinton has ramped up the pandering and outright lies of her campaign by claiming that electing her to the presidency will instantly lower the price of oil," grumbled Big Dogs Weblog. "The Arabs are probably keeping the oil price high to help Democrats win the White House anyway. The Democrats have a history of being in bed with the terrorists and the Commies."

"Well unless she is in the pocket book of OPEC I don't really see how this is possible," wrote a blogger at Our Nation UnDivided. "Of course we did go to Iraq for oil as many people think, so maybe she will open up their reserves for our using. If that was the purpose for the war and all. Or maybe she is just hoping some naive or uneducated Americans will pick up on her lies and actually vote for her."

ThatPoliticalBlog raised even more sinister concerns, writing, "On the surface it looks like standard electioneering BS promises to the voters. Offer them anything that will win their votes is typical Democrat strategy. Nevertheless, what if this is some real insight into something much more menacing? ... Is it really that much of a stretch to imagine Hillary attempting to nationalize American oil?"
