Hubris (e.g. Iraq) and the end of cheap oil and a punk currency, weakened by excessive debt. Eight years (and probably another four) of a vacuum of leadership where it's needed, with the vacuum filled by wackos and nutjobs... and, yes, a failure to go full speed ahead with alternatives to oil: lighter vehicles, solar and wind power....
Yeah, thank God George W. Bush is president.
